MUNA Joins Forces with NONM for Tree Planting Campaign
January 22, 2024: “By planting trees, we are making a positive contribution to our community, our country, and our world, so let’s roll up our sleeves, grab a shovel, and get to work.”
The Malawi-UK Nurses Association (MUNA) collaborated with the National Organization of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NONM) to conduct a tree planting exercise at St John’s Girls Secondary school in Mangochi on Friday last week.
The event was attended by the school’s patron, management, students, and Father Joseph Kimu, the Director of Radio Maria Malawi from the Diocese of Mangochi.
Addressing the gathering, Kimu highlighted the pressing issue of deforestation in Malawi, emphasizing its adverse effects such as soil erosion, loss of wildlife habitat, and reduced availability of clean water. Drawing attention to the recent devastating cyclone, he underscored the urgent need to address climate change.
“We have seen firsthand the destruction and devastation that can result from extreme weather events, and it is clear that we must take action to protect our environment,” he said.
Father Kimu expressed gratitude for the support and passion exhibited by Malawian-UK Nurses, describing them as leaders not only in healthcare but also in championing environmental sustainability. He emphasized the vital role trees play in the fight against climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide and reducing harmful greenhouse gases.
Mr Gondwe, representing NONM at the event, echoed Father Kimu’s sentiments. He emphasized the importance of individual actions and urged participants to make a commitment to protect and preserve the environment.
“By planting trees, we are making a positive contribution to our community, our country, and our world, so let’s roll up our sleeves, grab a shovel, and get to work.” he said.

About 300 trees were planted in the initiative which targets planting 600 trees.
NONM has always been and will continue to be committed to caring for the environment and commends MUNA for this initiative and collaboration. Last year NONM also undertook a tree planting initiative in the Lilongwe Ecological Corridor Initiative.
