Nursing & Midwifery Policy
The nursing and midwifery policy aims at providing guidance in the provision of comprehensive and quality healthcare services to all Malawians. NONM helps in ensuring that the policy goals in nursing and midwifery are met.
Nursing and Midwifery Regulation and EducationNONM often makes sure that the issues that it lobbies and advocates for are aligned to the nursing and midwifery policy or research evidence. This helps NONM to move in the same direction with the government while subsequently fulfilling its mission as a trade union.
The nursing and midwifery policy (2018-2023) aims at providing the framework for the provision of comprehensive, quality and equitable nursing and midwifery services that will contribute towards attainment of health-related goals including Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The policy objectives include:
- To reduce nursing and midwifery vacancy rates from 63% to 50%
- To provide direction to decision makers, stakeholders and partners for effective planning and implementation of nursing and midwifery services
- To facilitate delivery of quality nursing and midwifery services
- To facilitate quality clinical mentorship and supervision of students; and timely placement of new nursing and midwifery graduates
- To promote utilization of research evidence in nursing and midwifery management, education and practice
The National Organization of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NONM) strives to ensure that the policy objectives are fulfilled by lobbying and advocating to decision makers to align and carry out their plans in line with the objectives. This helps NONM to move in the same direction with the government since all concerns or suggestions raised by NONM are often aligned to the policy objectives.
